September 2017 Meeting

Dan Melvin and Robert Cox - September 23, 2017

The fall, 2017 OTAPS meeting was at the home of Dan and Robert in Manzanita, Oregon. There were about 30 phonograph enthusiasts attending the event some from as far away as Victoria, B.C. Dan’s collection of phonographs and phonograph advertising is quite unique. The advertising is particularly noteworthy and features many pieces that once hung in phonograph dealer show rooms. These were not pieces sold to the general public. Even the garage contains advertising and phonograph items hung around the walls. In addition to the viewing of Dan’s collection, there was an active swap meet, a raffle with 3 members winning small phonograph related prizes, and three presentations by OTAPS members Dan Melvin, Nick Williams and Russie Ofria. Dan told the history of the Enrico Caruso painting hanging in his living room and demonstrated the Opera House Phonograph. Nick demonstrated a unique early carbon microphone, and Russie showed us how to add patina to several kinds of metal. All in all it was a beautiful day near the Oregon beach with plenty of delicious food and great conversation. -- Stan Stanford
